Why he chose the Killing Fields: In an interview with DVD Movie Guide Joffe says, he got invovled with directing the Killing Fields when David Puttnam gave him the screen play to read and after which he wrote Puttnam a letter saying, "I think this is a wonderful project. Many people will tell you it’s a war story – and it’s not. If you do this as a war story it will be soon forgotten. It’s a love story. If you do it as a love story, the film will just go on forever because it’s just extraordinary."

Other movies he has done and how they relate: He has done movies like The Mission in 1986 which compares to The Killing Fields because they are both historical films.

Waterston chose the film because, it had a great script, director, producer and it was an important subject.

Biography: Dr. Haing S. Ngor
Ngor won an Oscar for best supporting actor (Oscars won)

Why he chose the role:
He accepted the role as Dith Pran because he had just escaped from the Khmer Rouge to the United States, and his medical qualifications from France were not recognized and he was unable to find a job, until Joffe casted him.
